Chris Hay

Scientific Data Manager, IISD-ELA

Chris Hay is the Scientific Data Manager for IISD Experimental Lakes Area, where

Chris leads governance and optimization of the site’s scientific data and works to facilitate use of that data by internal and external researchers. To do this, he leverages data management fundamentals: maintaining a well-organized master database, thorough metadata and reference data, standardizing data for interoperability, and implementing quality control.

Prior to joining IISD-ELA in November 2021, Chris worked with environmental data for government agencies and conservation organizations, including Parks Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. He specialized in Geographic Information Systems and related disciplines, with a background in conservation and vegetation field surveys. His experience building a data system for Indigenous communities provided relevant experience for continually maturing IISD-ELA's current data infrastructure.

He holds a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Western Ontario, an Advanced Diploma in GIS Technology from Red River College, and a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the University of Manitoba. Chris has also earned the Associate-level Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) designation from DAMA International.
